Breast Cancer in Men: What You Need to Know

While breast cancer is primarily associated with women, men can develop it, too. Although rare, male breast cancer accounts for about 1% of all breast cancer cases. It’s crucial for men to be aware of the signs, symptoms, and risk factors so they can seek timely medical advice.

Male breast cancer typically develops in the small amount of breast tissue that men have. The most common symptom is a lump in the chest area, but other signs include nipple discharge, skin dimpling, or changes in breast size. Unfortunately, men are often diagnosed at later stages because they don’t consider themselves at risk, leading to a poorer prognosis.

Risk factors for men include a family history of breast cancer, particularly mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, exposure to radiation, and conditions that increase estrogen levels, such as liver disease or obesity.

Treatment for male breast cancer usually involves surgery to remove the breast tissue, followed by chemotherapy, radiation, or hormone therapy, depending on the stage and type of cancer.

Raising awareness is key. Men should not ignore changes in their chest area and should report any concerns to their doctor. While male breast cancer is rare, early detection remains critical for effective treatment.
