How to Take Care of Your Heart

Cardiovascular Health Tips for the Hispanic Community

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the Hispanic community, but with a few lifestyle changes, we can significantly reduce the risk. Here are some practical tips to keep your heart healthy and strong.

    1. Maintain a Healthy Diet

A balanced diet is key to heart health. Include more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Reduce your intake of sodium, saturated fats, and processed foods. Olive oil, beans, and avocado are excellent options for Latin cooking without compromising health.

    2. Stay Active

Regular exercise helps control blood pressure and cholesterol. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week, such as walking, dancing, or cycling. You don’t need a gym—dancing salsa at home counts too!

    3. Monitor Your Blood Pressure and Cholesterol

High blood pressure and cholesterol can go unnoticed since they don’t always have symptoms. Get regular check-ups to detect and treat any issues early.

    4. Quit Smoking and Limit Alcohol Consumption

Smoking damages arteries and increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. If you smoke, seek help to quit. Also, limit alcohol intake to one drink per day for women and two for men.

    5. Manage Stress

Chronic stress can raise blood pressure and harm the heart. Try relaxation techniques like meditation, yoga, or simply taking a walk outdoors.

    6. Don’t Ignore Warning Signs

If you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or extreme fatigue, seek medical attention immediately. Acting fast can save your life.

Taking care of your heart is a daily commitment. Small changes in your routine can make a big difference and help you live a longer, healthier life.
